Accessories Needed for Grow Tents

There are a couple complete packages here. But a plain tent only will need the list here if it is going to be successful. If you already have the equipment, great! Otherwise, you’ll need…

Lighting

Special lighting with the full spectrum that the plants need. This is usually a full spectrum grow light that is hung above the plants near the ceiling of your hydroponic grow tent. It contains the range of light in the proper colors; red, blue, white to make up the full spectrum of lighting needed. Lighting is available as bulbs, fluorescent type, and LED lighting. Your choice will depend on your pocketbook. The light is important for the plants to flourish and grow.

The lights come in different wattages and sizes to give exactly what you need for your grow tent. To make sure you get the right size, measure your tent before buying the lights so you get the proper wattage.

The rule is generally 50 watts for each square foot of space. To get the right measurements, calculate the total growing length in feet by the width in feet. For example, a grow tent that is 4×4 equals 16 square feet. If you multiply the 16 feet by 50 watts you will find your tent needs 800 watts of light for proper growth.

Ventilation

A ventilation system to keep the air moving in the tent. Air that circulates through the tent keeps the air from getting stale. Stale air can cause mold and mildew which will endanger your plants! Ventilation prevents stunted growth by getting fresh CO2 in the air for the plants to use for growth.

When putting in the fans in the ports in the tent, one should be near the top sucking air out, and the other in the bottom drawing in clean fresh air. The circulation also makes the stems and branches stronger so they don’t break. And, it also helps with temperature and humidity control.

Exhaust from the top, draw in from the bottom and assist with a couple oscillating fans inside the tent. Also, make sure you do not have the exhaust and intake in the same rooms. This is where putting in a hose, like dryer hose into another room or window for fresh air to come in. Or put the exhaust hose out a window, either one serves the right purpose.

Humidity and Temperature controls

Knowing about the temperature and humidity will go a long way in the health of your plants. If they are wrong, lots of things can happen like mold, stressed plants, mildew, pests and your whole crop can die!

A good temp for seedlings is between 68 and 70F. When the plants get older you can increase the temp to about 82F this is with the lights ON. At night a good range is between 62 and 72F.

Make sure that the day and night temps have no more than a 10-degree difference. If it does get cold in the grow tent, you may want to get a small radiator type heater with a thermostat to keep temps even. To keep an eye on the temps. Get a thermometer that has a wire on it for placing inside the area. Then hang the thermometer outside the tent.

Humidity for optimum conditions should be between 40 and 60% but no higher than 75% or lower than 20%.  If it is higher than 75% you may need to re think your ventilation system or get a dehumidifier.
